Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

It's Official

And I have to say, I'm not very happy about it...

The Atlanta Braves announced today that they declined to tender 2007 contract offers to second baseman Marcus Giles and right-handed pitcher Chris Reitsma by tonight's (Dec. 12) deadline. Both players are now free to negotiate with any of the 30 Major League teams.

trade
It was recently announced that the Rockies have traded Jason Jennings to the Astros for Taveras, Hirsh, and Bucholz.

Seems lopsided
I bet they bank on resigning him next season.  Hirsh could be something special, but Bucholz is a potential #3-#4 guy and Tavares is serviceable.  Jennings better pitch well.

Please
Don't let the Mets sign him...I'll throw up.

cringe
some things about MLB baseball really suck. you gotta know both the padres and mets are going to go after him.

by the way, dave o'brien had an interesting blog on ajc.com about how raphael soriano hasn't regained form since getting hit by Vlad last season. i guess the scouts he's talked to are saying RS is peaking at about 91 with very little control (supposed to be hitting 95-96) in the winter leagues in the DR. perhaps, regarding the HoRam for RS trade, the joke was on us! i guess we'll have to wait to see til next season.

you guys
can't be surprised, this team never spends on its stars unless you're name is Chipper or well Chipper (and even then he has to take pay cuts)

although Giles is in decline mode

thats the main reason i quit following the braves years ago, they have no loyalty and claim poverty

hopefully for you're sake, Giles asked out to go and sign with the Pads

question:  who's gonna play 2nd base for ya'll now?

by 31yonkers5 on Dec 12, 2006 7:34 PM EST reply actions

Well
I'll let your acute isinformation slide since "you don't follow the braves." They never claim poverty, they claim "we got sold when an $80 mil payroll was still big, but our budget hasn't increased in 5 years so that planning we had done when we signed our stars to big contracts went out the window when we got bought out by a fading conglomerate."

And one of the 3 or 4 minor league second basemen we have will probably take giels place. Just my guess

nah its fine
i followed the braves back in the day.  before 98 pretty much and they suck when it comes to paying their star athletes.  the list is to endless to start jotting down names, but there came a point where i just had enough of the bull

Mariners "acquire" Vidro
Washington just sent Vidro and a measly $4M (he's owed $16M total over the nxt two years) to Seattle in exchange for oft-injured former prospect OF Chris Snelling and a minor league pitcher.  I bring this up because I find it incredible that we didn't add Giles to Ramirez and go for the gold (J.J. Putz) in our deal with the Mariners.  Giles is significantly more valueable than Vidro and they'll cost (with the Nats picking up part of the tab) the same in 2007.  At very least we could have ensured that he'd be playing in the other league if he turns it around, instead of for an NL contender (the Pads or Mets) that he'll likely sign with now.  This, coupled with the disconcerting reports regarding Soriano, has pushed me over the edge this offseason.  We can't get Baldelli or even make a deal with Pittsburgh without moving what we gave up to Settle: starting pitching depth.  This is just terrible; Schuerholz is failing us.
