Renteria a Member of the Braves

According to MLB.com, early Thursday morning, John Schuerholz completed a trade with the Red Sox, who will send Edgar Renteria and undisclosed cash considerations to Atlanta in exchange for top prospect Andy Marte.

Am I surprised? Not really. Disappointed? Yes. I was really hoping that Wilson Betemit would get a serious chance to play. Now it looks like he is destined to remain the utility player he already is.

I know I said I'd provide some commentary, but so much is happening, I figured I'd wait until after the day is over.

Cash considerations?
How much if any of Renteria's contract are the Red Sox going to pick up? Or are we settled with that nice little albatross around our necks for the next few years?

Significant Cash
According to FoxSports.com, "The deal, first reported by ESPN, also includes a sizeable cash payment, believed to be about $11 million, from the Red Sox that will cover part of Renteria's remaining salary. The cash in the deal would reduce the Braves commitment to Renteria over the next three years to approximately $6 million per season."

Now if that is true, I can live with it.

Aaak!

I'm with you, I was really hoping betemit would get a serious chance to play.  I kept hoping Schuerholz would use Marte to get Baez to fill the closer role, or Gathright to fill the leadoff spot.  I really thought filling the leadoff hole with an OF'er like gathright and using Betemit at SS would have been a great approach.  Well, Schuerholz is certainly a brighter GM than I am, so I'll just have to get used to Renteria in Atlanta.  Sigh.

I'm With You...
I think JS went to these meetings with every intention of dangling Marte, but I was hoping that if he dealt Marte, it wouldn't be to fill the SS slot with Renteria. I still think Betamit will get 300 at bats, but I would like to see him get a shot at short before Escobar or Andrus arrived.

Betemit trade bait?

FoxSports.com said that Betemit is getting a lot of trade interest, so maybe he won't even be a Brave in '06.  If he is, where do you see him getting 300 ABs?  Any reports of him filling an OF role?  Has he ever played OF?
